Published in The Times: Top Tips to boost your child’s reading fluency

I am delighted to announce that I have just had a second article published by The School Gate on The Times Blog! My previous article was entitled “10 Fun Ways to Learn your Spellings”. This one deals with encouraging children to become fluent readers.

I think that this article will be useful for many, many parents who are unsure what to do when their child get’s stuck on a word. Do I ask him/her to sound it out? What if it’s tricky to sound out? How quickly do I give the word? Are there other ways of supporting reading? This article clearly outlines the exact techniques that I use everyday in my own classroom. It only costs £1 so it shouldn’t break the bank! Click here for a link.

Many thanks to Sarah Ebner, the editor of  The School Gate for her support. I am a huge fan of her book  “The Starting School Survival Guide”. Read my review of her book here. It is well worth a read if you have yet unravel playground etiquette or have a child who is still a little unsettled in school. There is lots of great advice from other parents, teachers and Principal’s that should help to steer you in the right direction.

I would love to know what you think of my article. I find these techniques to be just brilliant and I hope that you do too!

Have fun,

Miss Mernagh 🙂
